Make sure you have a solid connection there. Twist them together solidly, wire nut them. The device is not allowed to be point of the neutral connection by code. Cut a small white wire and run that wire from the wire nut to the silver screw of the outlet. I would take the neutrals out if they're back stabbed. It's also additionally possible that you lost the neutral connection internally of a back stabbed outlet, I've seen that many many times. You can bring an extension cord over and make sure you have a good ground and neutral. If your plug tester is saying you lost a neutral, check continuity and resistance of the ground to the neutral. A short circuit draws all the current available, its like an explosion, so I don't think you have a short circuit. Again, with a picture it'd be much easier to see what's going on.Īrcing causes like a light in there and heat. It's possible that you have a bad switch, and it is allowing this arcing to happen because the contacts close but aren't closed all the way with the switch in the on position. The small fire that you describe is what we call an arc, and I've seen that in a backstabbed outlet when it wasn't making a good connection and the current was arcing through the small amount of air present in the connection. I still want to see a picture, but It actually sounds like you wired it correctly, I would verify that what you think are neutrals are actually neutrals but it sounds like you did it right. What is the voltage between the two hot wires? If you're showing an open neutral somewhere, did you lose a neutral on a multi wire Branch circuit? This is going to give you 240 volts in series across your loads. It seems like you have a multimeter if you're able to measure voltage, can you determine which cable is the hot? I assume you have two hots coming in with separate neutrals, yes? Did you connect the neutrals together? It's possible that what you think is a neutral is in fact a switch leg. Did you use a single throw double pole switch or a stacked switch? Are the feeds the switch legs? What fin/tab did you break off?Īt the very least, please remove the switch and cap off all the wires separately. What do you mean by commons? Is that the neutral or the hot wire? What kind of leviton switch? Leviton is a brand name they have tons of switches. "I replaced the switch today with a Leviton, I broke the fin off, rewired with the feeds to the commons, and then light and disposal on different poles.
